Defending has always been a deciding factor in any game. No matter, how good attackers you have in your side. In the end, it always comes to the backline. Also, as Sir Alex Ferguson once said, “Attack wins you games, defense wins you titles”,
The first defender that has made to our left back spot is Andrew Robertson. The Scottish defender has been phenomenal. The Liverpool defender came into limelight in the last season, but he is just improving day by day. Robertson did not only make 2.2 tackles but also provided three assists in his 18 League appearances this season. The 24-year-old defender is always a threat from left flank as he provides great crosses and never gets tired running up and down the wing.
On the right side of Robertson at the center back position. We have decided to keep Harry Maguire. The English defender was the prime target of Manchester United. However, the shortage of funds made them lose one of the talented defenders. The Englishman has been solid at the back as he has made 1.5 interceptions along with 5.6 clearances in his 16 league appearances this season. Maguire has acted as a leader of the Leicester backline and it did help them in defeating City and Chelsea back to back in a single week.
Partnering Maguire at the center back position is Virgil Van Dijk. I don’t think that anybody else could replace the Dutchman at this spot. Because he has been exceptional since the day, he has arrived at the Anfield. One of the major reasons, why Liverpool were not able to thrive in the Premier League was due to their weak defense. However, the inclusion of Van Dijk in the backline has made the Reds defense rock-solid. The Liverpool defender makes sure that the backline is intact and there is no loophole. His game reading and intercepting ability left us with no option other than to put him on this team.
The last but not the least, Trent-Alexander Arnold completes our defense line in the Premier League Team of 2018. The Englishman didn’t take a lot of time in making his mark in the League, which is not a small thing. The Liverpool defender was included in England’s World Cup roster for his brilliant performances last season. Many raised questions about his capabilities and inclusion in the national team. However, the 20-year-old defender gave them fitting reply by his consistent performances. The English defender did not only help his side in defense but also provided support to attackers from the right flank.
