The selection for the left-back position was easy and I don’t think anyone other than Marcelo deserves to be at this position. The Brazilian has been a crucial asset for Madrid in the defense and is considered quite solid on the left wing. And his performance in this season’s Champions League was bewildering. The 30-year-old defender provided more help in the attacking than defense. But his crucial goals against Juventus and Bayern Munich helped his club in moving forward in the League this season.
Also, the crosses of Marcelo from the left wing are effective and it was his cross in the final that helped Bale in scoring a stunner. Despite being a defender, the Brazilian has scored three goals and provided four assists in 11 appearances in the Champions League this season. The major reason for keeping him in the team was that he can play in both defense and attacking positions.
Before the arrival of Virgil Van Dijk, Liverpool was facing major problems in the defensive line. And no one considered them a contender for the Champions League this season. Yet, they proved everybody wrong after giving amazing performances against major clubs and made it to the final. The major reason behind their success was not only their attacking trio but also the back line.
Van Dijk addition in the defense made the Reds defense line fairly strong. Although, the former Saints defender played half number of the games compared to any other defender from a different club. And that was because he arrived at Anfield in the middle of the season.
His concrete performances in the Champions League helped him in making it to this team over the likes of other famous center backs. In the six appearances in UCL, Van Dijk made 1.7 interceptions and 6.8 clearances per game. Also, the Dutch defender contained Cristiano Ronaldo in the final and gave him no space whatsoever to score. Although the 26-year-old defender failed to win the Champions League this season, his elite performances deserve appreciation.
Raphael Varane will be a center back partner of Van Dijk in our Champions League Team of the Season. We also considered Sergio Ramos for this position, but the Spanish defender hasn’t been consistent this season. This was the major reason why we have selected Varane over Ramos.
The French defender made six clearances and provided 49 passes per game in this season’s Champions League campaign. The 25-year-old defender made crucial tackles against big clubs and his performance against Bayern Munich was overwhelming. The Real defender gave no space to Frank Ribery to cut inside and score. And was always present up there to stop any shot that was going towards Navas.
Joshua Kimmich is the last defender in our Champions League Team of the Season. The German defender scored four goals and assisted another three in 11 appearances of the Champions League this season. The 23-year-old defender acquired Philipp Lahm’s position in the Bayern’s defense and has done justice to it. The German defender doesn’t only provided stability in defense but also provided aid in attack from the right wing.
Kimmich’s performance against Real in the semi-final got him lots of appreciation. The 23-year-old defender scored goals in both the legs and if Sven Ulreich wouldn’t have made a blunder. Then maybe Bayern would have been in final in place of Los Blancos.
