This match could have been a showdown between Brazil and Germany, but circumstances and Germany’s ineptitude resulted in it being Brazil facing Mexico.
While we could mull over what this match could have been, it is time to focus on the teams playing this game. Brazil enter this fixture after topping their group and Mexico enters it finishing second in their group. The latter should have topped their group but a 0-3 loss to Sweden condemned them to face one of the tournament favorites.
That being said, Brazil shouldn’t enter this fixture thinking they’ve got the game in the bag. Mexico looked like a good quality side in their opening two games and a repeat performance could cause Brazil some trouble. But, if the Mexico that played against Sweden turns up, then it will be smooth sailing for Brazil.
Tite’s men, while staying undefeated in the tournament have still not been very convincing. They drew against Switzerland and then won against Costa Rica, albeit in the last minutes of the game. The Serbian team they faced looked listless and anything but a win would have been a disappointment.
Looking at how Sunday’s Round of 16 fixtures went, don’t be surprised if this game is also decided in extra time or penalties.
